That&#8217;s not because the quality of 3D printers is falling or the cost is increasing\u2014exactly the opposite. The average 3D printer is very good quality, reasonably simple to use, and very affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, I&#8217;ll mention the printer features that I think are most valuable and the printers I have experience with that possess those features.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Key features:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>Lots of customer support<\/strong>: You can get a really inexpensive 3D printer from China, and it will produce a very nice print.<\/span>\u00a0 Unfortunately, you won&#8217;t have much help if you run into problems.\u00a0 You may also be surprised at how hard it is to make sense of the assembly manual, user manual, or QuickStart guide that comes with the printer because they haven&#8217;t put much effort into the translation from Chinese.\u00a0 Look for a manufacturer who goes out of their way to support their printers 24\/7 with live chat and a phone number if you need to talk to someone.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Larger print\/build surface:<\/strong> If you want to print a typical keyguard, you&#8217;ll need a printer that can print something at least 250 mm wide, and 300 mm wide is even better.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Direct Feed extruder:<\/strong> FDM printers utilize two different methods for delivering plastic filament to the heated extruder (direct feed vs. Bowden tube).\u00a0 Printers with direct feed mechanisms are better at printing flexible filaments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Silent Stepper Drivers and Fans:<\/strong> Without going into any detail about what a stepper driver is, let it be said that some printers produce a loud whine when they print.\u00a0 That whine can come from the stepper drivers inside the electronics, or they can come from the fans that cool the extruder and the print &#8211; or both!\u00a0 These printers can be quite annoying unless placed in a separate room, well away from people&#8217;s ears.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible now to find printers that are almost silent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Rapid Warm-up:<\/strong> If the printer can send alternating current (A\/C) directly to the print surface, it will heat up faster and be ready to print much sooner. The hotter the print surface needs to be, the more time you&#8217;ll save\u2014as in 10 minutes or more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The two printers I&#8217;m <em><strong>currently<\/strong> (Feb. 15, 2025) <\/em>using and recommending are the Prusa XL* and the Prusa MK4:<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<table id=\"_idgpn_28\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse; text-align: center;\">\n<p><a id=\"_idgpn_735\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/en\/product\/original-prusa-mk4-kit-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prusa MK4<\/a>: $799 (kit), $1099 (assembled)<br \/>Build Surface: 250 mm x 210 mm<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Prusa MK4 is the highest quality, non-commercial 3D printer and has been for some time.\u00a0 Prusa has amazing customer service and support.\u00a0 The printer also has some great features that make printing easy &#8211; the most prominent is a removable, flexible build plate that makes it easy to detach the print once finished.\u00a0 You can purchase the Prusa in kit form or fully assembled.\u00a0 I recommend you purchase the kit &#8211; not just for the cost savings.\u00a0 Once you&#8217;ve assembled the kit, you&#8217;ll be much more confident in maintaining the printer going forward because you&#8217;ll know it inside and out.\u00a0 <\/span><a id=\"_idgpn_50\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/XrqRXyVw8KI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0This video<\/a> shows Stephan and CNC Kitchen reviewing the MK4.<\/p>\n<p>* I also own and use a Prusa XL with two extruders (called tool-heads by Prusa for a good reason).\u00a0 I love the printer except for one nagging issue that caused me to hack it.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t like the long PTFE tube; you must push the filament through to get it to the extruder.\u00a0 Sometimes, when it gets there, it gets caught and doesn&#8217;t want to go in.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine pushing a flexible filament through that tube.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I can&#8217;t wholeheartedly recommend the printer.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also why I&#8217;m concerned about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusa-core-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prusa CORE One printer<\/a> &#8211; though if my MK4 ever stops working, I&#8217;ll probably move up to a CORE One.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DTQ9_OrxauA?si=iGVXCPzd7KDzDWGF\">good review<\/a> of the CORE One.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to be printing items that are smaller than a keyguard &#8211; like our <a id=\"_idgpn_789\" href=\"https:\/\/volksswitch.org\/index.php\/volks-devices\/bliss-tactile-symbols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bliss Tactile Symbols<\/a> &#8211; you can&#8217;t go wrong with the <a id=\"_idgpn_572\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/original-prusa-mini-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prusa Mini +<\/a> 3D printer:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_idgpn_1521\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-6641\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=412%2C411&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?w=1696&amp;ssl=1 1696w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=1536%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/volksswitch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/prusa-mini-printer.jpg?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The printer features a print surface measuring 180 mm by 180 mm.\u00a0 It does have a Bowden tube for delivering filament to the hot end, but you&#8217;ll be doing most of your printing with PLA rather than a flexible filament.\u00a0 My guess is that it does a reasonable job of printing TPU as well.\u00a0 The printer can be purchased in kit form for $349 and in &#8220;almost completely assembled&#8221; form for $399.\u00a0 In this case, I suggest paying the extra $40 to save yourself the rest of the assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other printers that I have no experience with but look promising and have a 300 mm x 300 mm print surface or larger:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/aMwPBZm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creality K1 Max<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/8uWciuv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creality Ender 3 V3 Plus<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/jlQvQm1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sovol T500<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/us.store.bambulab.com\/products\/h2s?from=navigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bambu Lab H2S<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/1dskyU7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creality K2 Pro + CFS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusa-core-one-l-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prusa Core One L<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some smaller printers that I have no experience with but have gotten good press:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/7GhxR8P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ELEGOO Neptune 4<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/us.store.bambulab.com\/products\/a1?variant=41583355199624&amp;currency=USD&amp;utm_medium=product_sync&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_content=sag_organic&amp;utm_campaign=sag_organic&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA-bmsBhAGEiwAoaQNmu-P2Nr3jQp3tOrz3zrB7jz5vfr27eX8MYYmX2qlTxoaLAhnLS0BhRoCvzQQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bambu Lab A1<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/us.store.bambulab.com\/products\/p1s?variant=41516337070216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bambu Lab P1S<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/bUOa1Hk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creality K1<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@AuroraTech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aurora Tech YouTube channel<\/a> regularly reviews 3D printers in an honest and in-depth manner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ll be printing keyguards for most iPads, a printer with a 250 mm build plate will work just fine. That can seem counterintuitive when you consider the size of an iPad, but remember that the overall size of the keyguard is determined by the opening in the case, not the size of the tablet.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you&#8217;ll be printing keyguards for large iPads and Accent systems\u2014and even more so, if you&#8217;ll be printing keyguards for Chromebooks\u2014you&#8217;ll need a printer with a build surface that is at least 300 mm in width.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One feature you <em><strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> <\/em>need is &#8220;multi-color printing.&#8221;\u00a0 Please don&#8217;t spend money on this feature or the additional equipment required to provide it.\u00a0 The technology needs much more time and development before it&#8217;s ready for general use.\u00a0 The Prusa printer picture above shows two filament roles, but one of the roles is &#8220;staged&#8221; for later use (which I find to be really useful).\u00a0 You can achieve many of the multi-color effects you want by swapping filament colors at key points in the 3D printing process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T get an SLA\/MSLA printer&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may have heard of SLA printers, which use liquid resins rather than plastic filament to build objects and can produce very detailed objects.<\/p>\n<p>All of that is true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to produce highly detailed miniatures &#8211; think Dungeons and Dragons tokens &#8211; then a resin printer might be a good choice.\u00a0 But they&#8217;re rarely appropriate for building assistive technology.\u00a0 The printed object is relatively fragile and limited in size.\u00a0 These printers are also a real pain to use.\u00a0 Michael at Teaching Tech describes the process <a id=\"_idgpn_197\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UU6tWhV010M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 He knows what he&#8217;s doing, but it still sounds scary!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it really worth the extra money to get a Prusa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve surveyed several people for their opinion on a printer to recommend to &#8220;non-technical&#8221; people.\u00a0 Every single one has said, without any hesitation, a Prusa.\u00a0 Along with the reliability and support I&#8217;ve mentioned above, I&#8217;d like to add how much Prusa goes out of their way to make things easy that would otherwise be a challenge with another printer.\u00a0 I often use multiple colors in my prints to make them more personal or usable.\u00a0 I also insert things like RFID tags and nuts into the prints.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GjrJrDV4PNw\">This video<\/a> shows how Prusa makes these things straightforward to do.\u00a0 Joseph Prusa may have a bit of an ego &#8211; but he&#8217;s earned it&#8230;\u00a0 And you never have to talk to him!<\/p>\n<p><strong>A report from the trenches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Schubring is an SLP with lots of experience in 3D-printing keyguards.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">She documented her journey and 3D-printer recommendations in this blog post:\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buildingaac.com\/post\/3d-printing-keyguards-an-epic-journey?fbclid=IwAR3LQugaU-Lr0U1-PCk1HWONMZPO2pFogd6dG3zDIf4OYG18J7hj8DCJGy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D Printing Keyguards &#8211; An Epic Journey<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A review of the current state of 3D printers from a person of trust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michael at Teaching Tech created <a id=\"_idgpn_59\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7k5ahi8SPTc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a video<\/a> describing the &#8220;current&#8221; state of the 3D printer market as well as its recent history (which was somewhat disappointing).\u00a0 Give it a listen.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t disagree materially with anything he says &#8211; though I&#8217;ve always been a &#8220;function over form&#8221; person, so I don&#8217;t need a &#8220;modern-looking&#8221; printer.\u00a0 And, while I&#8217;ll definitely use a touch screen if presented with one, I&#8217;d rather have a user interface that is logically organized.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an even <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9xFl_Eajh_w?si=T6X7FX3XaLPWYhTQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more recent comparison<\/a> of the best &#8220;bed slinger&#8221;
