Upgrade Weirdness

What caused your beautiful design to turn into this after you upgraded the keyguard designer?

Let’s start at the end of the story and work backward.

Look at the options in the Grid Info section of the Customizer:

You are probably seeing some of these options for the first time.  What is “cell height in px,” and what is “cell width in mm”?  What happened to “horizontal rail width” and “vertical rail width”?

These are the “new and improved” ways of specifying the size of the openings in the grid.  Your original settings for rail width haven’t been lost.  More on that in a moment, but let’s first understand why the layout looks weird.

Look at the value of “cell width in mm”.  It is currently set to 25 mm.  What’s the value for “number of columns”?  It’s set to 10.  That means that the grid has 10 openings in each row, and each opening is 25 mm wide – a total of 250 mm worth of openings.

However, this keyguard is for an iPad 9, and the iPad 9 screen is only 208 mm wide.  To handle this mismatch, the keyguard designer will force the cell openings to overlap, resulting in a design that completely opens the entire row.

Clearly, your original design didn’t have 25 mm wide openings.  What to do?  Until now, you used “vertical rail width” to control the opening width.  So, how do you determine the cell width of your original design?

The keyguard designer will give you that information in the Console pane.  If you look in the Console pane (that’s the window below where your keyguard is displayed), you’ll see something like this:

There will be a line that recommends that you change the cell width from 25 to a different and smaller value.  That number will be the width of your cells in your original design.  In this instance, I was instructed to change the value to 18 mm.

After I change “cell width in mm” to 18, I get my old design back:

You may need to make a few more changes to get your original design back, but they will all be called out in the console pane.

Save your Preset again to retain all your changes.

If you have lots of Presets for lots of keyguard designs, this process can be tedious.  We want to help you upgrade your Presets.  Take a look here and here.  If all that seems too much, contact us.  We’ll upgrade your Presets for you.
