Note that the Bliss Body design was taken directly from Eugene McDonald’s book Teaching and Using Blissymbolics.
The puzzle can act as a motivator for students who have mastered the “head”, “body/trunk”, “arm”, “hand”, and “legs and feet” concepts as well as their graphic representation. It may also help them refine their tactile skills and their ability to spatially locate and orient a part of the body. Finally, they may learn to use the process of elimination to select among remaining pieces.
The fact that the two “arm” and “hand” pieces are mirror images of one another, may be an additional challenge for the student. You may be able to use the fact that their own arms and hands are mirror images of each other to help the student associate the correct piece with the correct location in the base. One of the “arm” pieces has to be rotated 90-degrees to appear as a mirror image to the other arm.
The puzzles come in two sizes: standard and large. The raised symbols on the standard size puzzle match the size of the raised symbols on their corresponding Bliss Tactile Symbol. The large puzzle is 50% larger than the standard puzzle in all three dimensions. The larger puzzle may be easier to assemble for students with more limited motor control.
Note that the zip files contain only a single “arm” piece. You’ll need to print two of this piece.
