Custom Support Legs for Arkon Mounting System

Arkon makes a strong and inexpensive mounting system for tablets that can be mounted to tables and wheelchairs.  The system costs about $35 and comes with a variety of tablet support legs of different lengths.  Unfortunately, the length of the shelf on all of the legs is too small to reliably hold tablets that have been placed in cases:

We’ve created a custom support leg designer that allows you to create your custom support legs.   Download our designer from here.  Follow the instructions on this page to download and install a copy of OpenSCAD.

You can specify the following dimensions for your custom support legs:

The following image identifies how each of these dimensions controls the size of the support leg:

You can also specify whether the shelf of the support leg will have 4 raised ridges that will provide additional resistance for your soft-sided case sliding sideways in the mount:

We don’t recommend using ridges with hard-sided cases because they reduce the surface area of the support leg that’s in contact with the case. Instead, we recommend that you tell the support leg designer not to add shelf ridges. You can add additional resistance to having the hard-sided case slide sideways by painting the shelf surface with something like Flex Seal.

The design is printed on its side for maximum strength. It can also be printed without supports in this orientation. If you’re having trouble with adhesion, you may need to add a brim.

When deciding on the best value for leg length, measure the height of your case, subtract 150 mm, and then divide by 2.  In the following example, the case measures 190 mm from the bottom to the top of the handle.  190 mm – 150 mm = 40 mm.  40 mm divided by 2 = 20 mm, so we printed three support legs, each with a 20 mm leg length.  Two support legs were put on the bottom of the mount and one in the center of the top. Here’s what the final result looks like:
