Ready-to-Cut Keyguard Designs

This page is for all of you who are looking for a ready-to-laser-cut keyguard design.  With luck, we have what you need.

We’d like to thank Christine Baudin, M.S., CCC-SLP, and founder of the “AAC for the SLP” Facebook group, for suggesting the “ready-to-print” version of this idea and acting as the “final decider” for all questions and issues.

We’ve chosen the most popular layouts, for the most popular AAC apps, on the most popular tablets (iPad 7/8/9), and created designs (SVG files) that you can download and laser-cut for yourself or give to someone else to cut for you.

The apps we’ve chosen are Proloquo2Go (P2G), CoughDrop, Lamp Words for Life (LWFL), TD Snap, TouchChat, Grid for iPad, and Speak for Yourself (S4Y).

We’ve, mostly, designed these keyguards based on the “default” settings of the app.  On occasion, we’ve changed a default setting to provide more room for the buttons in the grid.  Look below for those settings.

By the way, if you simply can’t come up with an easy way to laser-cut your chosen design, the good folks at Keyguard AT will be happy to cut one for you via their Design Your Own Keyguard offer.   Some of these keyguard designs have over 100 button openings and may have rails so thin that Keyguard AT won’t guarantee the keyguard they create for you.  If you’re at all unsure, please send the SVG file to sales@marblesoft.com and ask them if they’ll be able to guarantee the design you’ve selected.

Designs are Organized by Case

Because the design of a keyguard is very dependent on the case that holds the tablet we’ve chosen four of the cases most recommended by speech-language pathologists.  The downloadable keyguard designs are organized by the case they will go into.  The designs are on a separate page for each case.  Look for a link at the end of the description for each case.

Fintie Case:

The Fintie Case has a large opening and can accommodate larger keyguards. It has a built-in ring stand which can be easily used by children.

Rug-Ed ProLOCK 10 w/SwivelRing Case:

The Rug-Ed ProLOCK 10 (w/SwivelRing) Case has a large opening and can accommodate larger keyguards and has a built-in ring stand which can be easily used by children as well as a built-in handle.

LTROP Case for Kids:

The LTROP case (and it’s many copycats) is one of the most commonly encountered case styles.  Unfortunately, the handle/stand is limited in how it can be angled and is unstable in the upright position.  (We’ve created a designer for a 3D-printable stand, for cases like this, that will allow you to position your tablet in a stable upright position.  Go here to learn more.)

SEYMAC Case:

The SEYMAC case is similar to the SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle case in that it comes with a solid front casing with built-in screen protector.  The screen protector has a clear plastic backing to protect the tablet from spills.

Unlike the SUPCASE, the SEYMAC case has a built-in ring stand which can be easily used by children and it comes with a shoulder strap for easy transport.

App Settings

All apps include settings that can affect the layout of buttons and bars.  Find your app below and see what settings we changed from the default for our keyguard designs.  You will need to setup your app the same way or the keyguard won’t match your layout.

Proloquo2 Go (P2G):

  • Settings >  Appearance > Message Window Size > “Very Small”

CoughDrop:

  • Preferences > Device Preferences > Device Layout > check “Always show the Back button in the header (recommended for users with key guards)”

Lamp Words for Life (LWFL):

  • the default settings are unchanged

Speak for Yourself (S4Y):

  • the default settings are unchanged

TD Snap:

  • the default settings are unchanged

TouchChat:

  • the default settings are unchanged
  • all layouts are also supported with “Speech Display Bar” > “Font Size” set to 72 points

Mounting Your Keyguard

Refer to these pages based on your choice of mounting method for a description of how to mount your keyguard:

Tweaking these keyguard designs

If one of these keyguards is close but not quite what you need, you can “easily” modify it so it will.  You’ll need to learn how to use the keyguard designer but you can get a big leg up by starting with the design we’ve already created.  Learn more about that process here.
