The Voice It provides for three different options for playing audio files. The sound can be produced by an internal speaker or an external speaker or both. Depending on your choice, you will need to obtain different hardware components and they will need to be wired together in different ways.
The three key hardware pieces in this area are the headphone plug and audio amplifier (to drive an internal speaker) and/or the headphone plug (for connection to an external speaker or set of headphones). Each of these items will (in some combination) need to plug into the “A0”, “3V3”, and “GND” slots in the last row of slots on the terminal block. In some cases, multiple components need to plug into the same slot or multiple wires from the same component need to plug into the same slot.
On this page we’ll describe how to connect these wires – in particular, how to use one or more 2-wire or 3-wire connectors to make it all work.
The headphone plug has two wires – one red and one black. You’ll cut off the black wire close to the surrounding insulation because it’s unneeded. The remaining red wire needs to plug into the A0 slot.
The headphone jack has three wires – one red, one white, and one black. Both the red and white wires need to plug into the A0 slot and the black wire needs to plug into the GND slot.
The audio amplifier needs power to work. You’ll be connecting the amp to the terminal block with two jumper wires. One will need to plug into the 3V3 slot and the other will need to plug into the GND slot.
The figures below show how to use the 2-wire and 3-wire connectors to prepare for installation:
Internal Speaker Only
You don’t need any 2 or 3-wire connectors for this configuration. You just need the headphone plug with the black wire cut close to the insulation and two male/male jumper cables:
External Speaker Only
For this configuration you need the headphone jack, one male/male jumper wires, and one 2-wire connector and one 3-wire connector:
Both an Internal Speaker and an External Speaker
For this configuration, you need the headphone jack, headphone plug, 3 male/male jumper wires, and three 3-wire connectors:
